The Easy Way to a Greener, Lusher Lawn

(ARA) - There's nothing quite as inviting as a lush green lawn, beckoning like a cool oasis in the midst of summertime heat. Of course, having a perfect lawn that's the envy of the neighborhood doesn't just happen by chance. Many common grasses typically require lots of springtime work (and expense) for overseeding, fertilizing, weed control and watering. And then there's moving, mowing and more mowing throughout the growing season.

If you're looking for a way to energize your tired lawn, and give it a golf course-quality look, but want to save time and money, the answer could be as simple as zoysia grass. Rather than ripping out an old lawn or reseeding over it, many thousands of homeowners have planted zoysia grass plugs right into their existing lawns. Zoysia grass is a tough, spreading turf grass that grows into a permanent, perennial lawn that never needs reseeding.

"Zoysia grass is a great choice for anyone who loves the look of a plush, healthy lawn but doesn't want to pamper it," said Steve Schug, agronomist and farm manager of Zoysia Farm Nurseries (www.zoysiafarms.com) in Taneytown, Md. "Most common turf grasses, such as Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue, are cool-season grasses that look fine in the spring and late fall. But they get stressed in the heat and drought of summer months, when you want your lawn to look its best. Zoysia grass, however, is a warm-season grass that thrives in summer heat and needs far less water during the growing season. Zoysia also needs less mowing than most other types of grasses, so it's much less labor intensive."

Unlike other grasses, which are grown from seed or installed as sod, Amazoy is a zoysia grass from Zoysia Farm Nurseries and is sold as individual starter plants. These zoysia grass plugs can be planted into bare ground or in areas where the existing lawn is thin or worn out.

Amazoy zoysia grass plugs quickly send out roots and sprouts from which new plants take root. The densely growing zoysia grass spreads outward, choking out all other growth -- including existing turf grasses, crabgrass and other summer weeds. Within two to three growing seasons in most climates, the grass plugs will spread to completely cover the lawn area. The result is a natural, durable lawn that can stand up to playground punishment, animal waste, summer heat and drought while still looking green and feeling plush -- just like a golf course.  No wonder so many golf course managers love it!

It needs no care or maintenance during the cold months. In areas that get frost, zoysia grass quietly goes dormant and stops growing. Zoysia grass is cold-tolerant, surviving temperatures as low as -30 F. When the weather warms up again the following spring, zoysia grass regains its natural green color and starts growing again.

Amazoy zoysia grass is available by mail direct from the grower by visiting www.zoysiafarms.com.
